Along with all of the magnificent people that attended, both the meetings and the Crystal Ball Reception, Jan. 14th was a great milestone for the New D.R.E. Family. I have been involved with D.R.E. for three and half years now, and I can truly say that I am not only appreciative and happy of our growth as a group up until now, but I am also very excited about where we are going as a group and as a brand in the near future. D.R.E. has changed my life since I joined, but I have realized through my experience with this group that D.R.E. is going to continue to change my life and consistently challenge me to be a better entrepreneur and human being. I enjoyed working the Crystal Ball Reception with my fellow D.R.E. Members; it never seizes to amaze me how much we actually do grow as a team. We can come together, most of us from different coast of the country, and help put on a star studded event in Los Angeles for the Crystal Ball Reception. All I can say now is LETS GO GET IT!!! Lets not stop here at the Crystal Ball Reception. Lets continue to SHOW UP to SHOW OUT like true D.R.E. Members, because no one can stop us but OURSELVES. Thanks D.R.E. for everything.

Crystal Ball Reception - Layah Willis

The Crystal Ball Announcement Reception was an amazing event! Through my membership and participation in D.R.E., I personally was able to witness an idea become a reality. The night of January 14th was beautiful. So many people attended and enjoyed the really good food, music, fashion show, and custom cars. It was truly a night to remember. Congratulations to Mr. Farr and Daniel for having such a great birthday. I am very happy to have shared that night with the both of them and all of the other D.R.E. members who were there. I appreciate those who worked hard that night and I hope to see you again soon.

In addition to attending the reception, D.R.E. members were given the opportunity to sit in and watch BSAA Executive Members participate in Pitch the Player. I am sure I could personally use what I learned in my future endeavors. Overall, I am very thankful for being a part of an amazing weekend that many people do not have the opportunity to experience.

Crystal Ball Reception - David Mills

The BSAA event this past January 14th in Los Angeles has profoundly impacted my experience with D.R.E. on several levels. With every event I have attended during my time as a member, I have been exposed to professionals that are operating at the top of their respective fields and students that are performing at the top of their classes. Since I have been a member, there have been many members and leaders alike that have come in to the group and left soon after. Through each of the events, each of the meetings that I have attended thus far, I couldn’t help but notice something different about the group of D.R.E. members that came out to Los Angeles. As I was sitting in on our Pitch the Player event, it hit me.
Every individual that took part in the business meetings, the Pitch the Player, and the celebration that night in L.A. were people who on multiple occasions made some significant sacrifice to SHOW UP to our events. Whether it was at our conference at Howard last spring or at our Gala at the Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles or at D.R.E. Day last semester in New York City, the members who took part in our event at Galpin and/or the retreat in Lake Tahoe have committed to showing up as a D.R.E. member.

In every instance throughout my time in L.A. during my Winter Break, one could notice the shift in our junior members and leaders from focusing on individual work ethic towards producing results as a group. For the first time, Khalid David, a junior leader pitched his business to a panel of executives that are THE top players in each of their fields. Khalid is one of the many examples of a member who has selflessly sacrificed, and as a result of that sacrifice was given an opportunity that only a few select individuals even know exists.

In the past there have always been individuals that have shown up, but there was still something different about how we showed up as a group this time. This event was the first time that each individual, and thus the group, has showed up CONSISTENTLY, showed up ON TIME, and showed up PREPARED to work and to serve. I am extremely confident in the leadership group we have going forwards towards maintain those standards. We’ve set the bar very high for 2010 and expect excellence in all that we do going forward. That was the most impressive aspect of the event at Galpin and what I always expect from myself and from D.R.E.

Crystal Ball Reception - Brittany Scott

The night of January 14, 2010 was definitely one to remember. The event was hosted by the BSAA’s newest partner, Galpin Motors. Numerous BSAA executive members and D.R.E. junior leaders from around the country came to the Galpin Complex, located in Van Nuys, California. The event was packed with serious business meetings and business pitches, but at night both business executive and celebrity alike came together for wonderful food and entertainment.
The day started off at 7:30A.M. with myself and other D.R.E. junior leaders having intense back-to-back meetings talking about the new leadership of D.R.E. with Mr. Farr and other BSAA Executive Members at Galpin’s Horseless Carriage Restaurant. Next up was an intense session of Pitch the Player, a session where Executive Members pitched their ideas to a panel of BSAA Executive Leaders, which included Randal Pinkett, winner of the 4th season of The Apprentice.

With most the business done for the day, the BSAA hosted the VIP Reception which was held in the Galpin Showroom. Finally, it was time for the Reception. Flanked by Spykers and Aston Martins, special guests, who included Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, got to experience a high-energy fashion show. The models showed cased Jeff Hamilton’s premium leather jackets along with designer bathing suits.

To wrap up the night Mr. Farr got on stage and brought up comedian Chris Spencer along with a few others to speak about their experiences with Mr. Farr. After getting surprised with a birthday cake, the finale was ready to be revealed: Galpin Automotive Sports had created a custom car for the BSAA, the Presidential Lincoln MKT-X. The car exemplified the stature of the BSAA - bold and exclusive. The night’s festivities concluded with an after party with D.R.E. members DJ Wyze 1 (myself) and DJ Allure on the turntables.

The Reception was immaculate and had a great turnout. From the fabulous gala to meeting fellow members and learning about their ideas and goals, I left the conference feeling empowered and confident in my vision for myself. D.R.E. and Mr. Farr were totally right; when you are surrounded by prodigious talent, you have no option but to raise your own standard higher and higher. I have written new goals for myself, after removing "can't" and "trying" from my vocabulary. My faith has also grown deeper, and I feel that God is leading me down the right path, especially after faith was heavily emphasized by Mr. Farr and the D.R.E. Executive Team.

What I learned and valued the most from this conference, though, is the power of the dedicated, tenacious and intellectual "we". Mr. Ray Lewis described it best: "If I hold up my hand against you [with outstretched fingers] you can individually break off each finger. But if I ball my fingers up into a fist, then NOTHING can stop me." This idea of the power of the collective whole is something that I do not think I have ever experienced or realized. I have always been one to help others by any means necessary, but I never understood the true definition of working together as a group, and being a support system for one another. It is a powerful feeling when you know that you can trust a fellow member enough to ask them to help you develop your business ideas or even be a partner in your business!

I am excited and feeling blessed to be a part of D.R.E. and to have attended the conference.

Best,

Jasmine Martin

Annual Conference Reflection: Daniel Henderson

The D.R.E. Annual Conference was a wonderful experience for me. As an organizer of the event, the entire weekend was a dream come true. As D.R.E. members began arriving I knew it was going to be a historic weekend. Many of the members had never been to California before, especially Hollywood. The White Linen reception was immaculate; the hotel guests keep staring as the D.R.E. members introduced themselves to one another. The reception was in a reserved area by the pool that included the prestigious Marilyn Monroe Suite at the Roosevelt Hotel.

On Saturday morning the business meetings began where the D.R.E. Leaders expounded on the Mission, Vision, and Purpose of D.R.E. Next up were sessions where the finer details about the economy were explained. In addition, members where shown how D.R.E. was going to interact with the economy to propel D.R.E. to unseen heights. However, the most prominent session was the branding session. D.R.E. members were shown how to brand themselves as exemplary D.R.E. members and how to embody the spirit of D.R.E. in every opportunity they pursued.

Saturday evening was the highlight of the night – The Black Tie Awards Gala. In the Blossom Ballroom at the Roosevelt it was announced that, Andre Farr, the chairman of the Black Sports Agents Association, was receiving the Medal of Honor for Entrepreneurial Excellence on January 14, 2010. The Gala was a huge success as multiple sponsors supported the D.R.E. event by sponsoring a table and donating money to the D.R.E. Scholarship fund.

The Annual Conference was an event that I shall never forget, and I’m already excited about the 2010 Annual Conference. Thanks to everyone that made this event possible!

Daniel Henderson

Annual Conference Reflection: Atima Lui

I had a very eye-opening experience with DRE last weekend during the First Annual D.R.E. Conference. I believe that everything happens for a reason, and I know that I was meant to attend the conference for many reasons:

Firstly, I needed to learn and internalize the MVPs of D.R.E. By understanding the Mission, Vision, and Purpose, I was given the proper vocabulary to not only really recognize what D.R.E. is, but also so that I can include people. When I included Chris Rodgers, I was able to explain pretty well what D.R.E. was, but now I feel that I have an even more powerful message to relay to others.

Second, I have grown extremely excited and pumped about D.R.E. Before, I believe that I was a complacent, nearly dormant member. Today, I am a passionate and active member that wants to contribute to our vision in any and every way. I have truly taken claim to D.R.E. and see it not just as an affiliation with great members, but as a movement of bright young black people improving the economic state of our race through mutual support and trust; how powerful and inspiring!

Third, the conference gave me the inspiration and encouragement to really pursue my dreams, no matter how large they are. My salon was always going to happen, but after attending the conference, I feel less alone in my pursuit of entrepreneurial success. There were so few young black entrepreneurs that I knew personally before the conference. Now I feel like a part of a support system and network that will help me to succeed; and I cannot wait to see what we all achieve with this help from one another.

Fourth, I know that I was meant to attend the conference because it really got my life on track. This summer, I have gotten a lot of offers from adults and students alike to take on many leadership roles; they see the things that I have done and am working on campus, and want me to join them in their pursuits to add to their success. While I have been very flattered by these offers, the conference has given me new direction and has shown me that if entrepreneurship is truly my passion, and if D.R.E.'s mission is truly my mission, than I need to resist being a "Jack of All Trades" and focus on the things that get me closer to achieving my entrepreneurial dreams. Since the conference, I have declined two previous offers to work for OTHER people, and have focused on being in the business of working for myself; this transformation has been extremely empowering for me.

I hope that my feedback has been clear in expressing how transformational the Conference was for me. I thank God for the opportunity you have given me!

Thanks, Mr. Farr and D.R.E. Leadership!

Atima Lui

Personal Account: David Mills

My name is David C. Mills Jr., and I am an engineering student at Columbia University from Nashville, TN. Disciplined Respected Entrepreneurs (D.R.E.) has had a subtle impact on my development as a student, a young entrepreneur, and as a young man.
Nashville is more liberal than most of the southern United States, yet it still experiences varying degrees of institutional discrimination. Fortunately, my parents made it their mission to expose me to successful black professionals at a very young age. I’ve served as a page in the Tennessee General Assembly where my father introduced me to many prominent African-Americans in the Tennessee Government. I’ve also attended several National Dental Association (NDA) conferences where my mother provided me with tremendous exposure to African-Americans in the medical community.

These experiences have provided me with an outlook on life that empowers me to believe that I can accomplish anything, period. One of my biggest frustrations in life has been that I’ve found it difficult to find intelligent blacks amongst my peers that share this perspective about their futures. Too often, my peers have either been discouraged by their teachers or, in the worst case, by their parents. I segregated myself from the “black crowd” at school, because I couldn’t connect with them as well in the classroom as I could in the gym or on the playground. My family prides itself on the ability to excel in the classroom, not just on the basketball court or the football field. It was disheartening that I wasn’t able to find the sense of accomplishment and hope in black youth that I so often found in my parents’ colleagues. Fortunately, I never lost faith.
Charles Fyffe once mentioned to me that D.R.E. also stands for Dream. Research. Execute. My father has always encouraged me to dream big and let my faith do the rest, so when I learned of D.R.E. at the Black Solidarity conference at Yale University this past spring, I immediately knew I needed to take advantage of this opportunity. Since joining, I have been involved with events where I have connected with fellow black students from across the country that are intelligent, but also share the drive and determination that, I believe, leads people to success. From the Executive Conclaves in New York City to when Howard University’s business fraternity hosted D.R.E., I have been engaged with current and prospective members of D.R.E.. The program has opened my eyes to the possibilities available when, as a community, African Americans collectively invest in our own future. I am honored to be a Disciplined Respected Entrepreneur, part of a group that is invested in the future of our community and I look forward to making history.

Personal Account: Stefanie Tomlin

Hello! My name is Stefanie Tomlin and I am currently studying Sport Management and Marketing at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey. I am from Kansas City, Kansas. When I first moved from home I was presented with the challenge of finding driven, focused people to surround myself with.
As I prepared to attend my first D.R.E. event, I was unsure about what to expect, but excited to see what this network, that I had heard much of, was all about. My first experience with D.R.E. was truly profound. I was fortunate enough to be invited to the Executive Conclave 2, held in New York, which featured innovative executives from the east coast. I was surprised to be thrown right into service and jumped at the opportunity. I learned a great deal that night about collectivism and the way that African Americans do business together. As a result of my involvement with Disciplined Respected Entrepreneurs (D.R.E.), I can say, without reservation, that I have improved as a person. The learning has not stopped.
Since that day, I have been a true believer in the power of D.R.E. It has further instilled in me the importance of hard work, perseverance, and positive energy. D.R.E has inspired me to dig deep within myself to find the excellence and extraordinary potential within. I am so blessed to continually be exposed to the profound group of students as well as the accomplished executives and leaders that we network with in D.R.E. I have no doubt that D.R.E. is enhancing my life and teaching me concepts that cannot be taught in the classroom. I have a future filled with success, happiness, and wealth and D.R.E. is the primary instrument in paving my way to that bright future!

Personal Account: Atima Lui

My name is Atima Lui, and I am a rising sophomore at Washington University in St. Louis. I became a D.R.E. Junior Leader just one month ago in May of 2009 and can already attest to how being a part of this network of driven black entrepreneurs can bring you support in your entrepreneurial endeavors in ways you never imagined, no matter where you are in the country.

I recently purchased a sunless tanning salon located on the campus of Washington University along with two other black female students. It is our goal to convert the tanning salon into a full service beauty salon that offers hair and nail services to people of all races by late August 2009, and to become the face of beauty and skincare at Wash. U.

Two weeks ago I made a trip from my hometown in Topeka, Kansas to the city of Chicago, Illinois to visit my older sister. When the CEO of D.R.E., Charles Fyffe, heard I was going to Chicago, he immediately put me in contact with another D.R.E. Junior Leader in the city named Morgan Smith. I was very appreciative and was struck not only by Mr. Fyffe’s dedication to bringing D.R.E. members together, but also by the national scope of the D.R.E. Network. Morgan and I were able to have dinner together, and I will never forget how awesome our meeting was. We had both expected that our meeting would be a nice get-together lasting just a few hours where we would be introduced to each other’s entrepreneurial goals. However, it ended up being much more. In the middle of learning about Morgan’s many accomplishments as a budding music artist, composer, and property owner in the city of Chicago, she mentioned how she is the co-manager of her mother’s beauty salon! She immediately invited me to her home after dinner to speak with her mother about salon ownership.

Morgan’s mother greeted me like an old friend, and proceeded to answer all of my questions, give me invaluable advice, and let me in on some of her competitive tricks in the salon industry. She even gave me a copy of her salon policy book and a few copies of her favorite promotional coupons for implementation at my own salon. Before we knew it, it was twelve in the morning, and I had been talking with Morgan and her mother for five hours! I left the Smith home with a new friend in Morgan, with a new mentor in Mrs. Smith, and with new business tools to be the best salon owner I can be; none of this would have been possible without D.R.E.

Personal Account: Layah R. I am Layah R. Willis. I am currently a senior at the University of California, Berkeley, majoring in Sociology with a minor in Education. I am the Director of Administration of D.R.E., and my involvement in D.R.E has truly been a blessing. D.R.E. has miraculously opened up doors to limitless possibilities. I joined D.R.E in August 2008 with little knowledge about the program. All I had was a vision and faith in an opportunity from God to do great things. My next move was to either take hold onto that opportunity or let it pass me by. Grasping that opportunity was the best choice I have ever made. Since I have been a member of D.R.E most of what I have learned about success is coming to life right before my eyes. My visions are becoming clearer. I am learning more about myself, life and people everyday, and I am loving it! This is the beginning of Dreams becoming Reality. All it takes is faith, confidence, vision, and my ability to maximize my potential to be the greatest I can be. I have faith that D.R.E. will revolutionize the world, make history and build a collective body of the greatest people in the world.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dre400.blogspot.com/2009/06/personal-account-layah-r-willis.html' title='Personal Account: Layah R. As the Chief Technology Officer of D.R.E., I am responsible for maintaining the D.R.E. blog, updating the D.R.E. twitter, and ensuring that the D.R.E. group has the latest technology to improve work productivity. In addition, I am the head DJ of D.R.E. Entertainment, a D.R.E. graphic designer, and desktop support specialist. Through D.R.E., I have become more focused on the future and created relationships that will benefit me throughout my professional career as an entrepreneur.

As a tech savvy person, I always dreamt about going to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which is an international convention that showcases the latest technology around the world. However, you either have to be in the industry or have connections to the industry to be admitted in. D.R.E. has a network with plenty of professionals within the tech industry and after joining I attended both the 2008 and 2009 CES. As a result I now have numerous contacts with executives that work in Silicon Valley. D.R.E. truly opens doors for me and I plan to take advantage of every opportunity that D.R.E. offers to entrepreneurs.

Contact Us

Please email DREmembership@gmail.com with any questions or comments.

D.R.E. My name is Tyler Turner and I am a third year student at the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 2010. I am studying Economics and working towards becoming a successful entrepreneur. I am originally from Los Angeles, graduating from View Park Prep. Charter High School and my current experiences with entrepreneurship are in entertainment through event planning, promotions and music production. I hold the position of the Chief Operating Officer within D.R.E. and have been with D.R.E. for several years. My time with the group has truly been life changing. D.R.E. has taught me the importance of networking at a young age and surrounding myself with like-minded individuals who all want to be successful entrepreneurs.

D.R.E. has released a person in me that I did not even know existed. Through the internships with Andre Farr, chairman of D.R.E., I have learned some hands on experience on how to conduct myself as a true entrepreneur. One thing that D.R.E. has taught me is to have true integrity as a business owner because with true integrity comes success. Once you embody this it allows you to become one with your mind, spirit, and actions. This to me is priceless because I shed unnecessary stress by being at one with those three things.

Being in D.R.E., I have been able to see and be a part of the incredible results that come out of networking and collective unity. I am proud to say I am a part of this revolutionary movement to empower blacks economically, physically, and mentally. I look forward to growing with all fellow D.R.E members and sustaining a long lasting partnership in business and in health.

D.R.E. D.R.E. Jr. Leaders market and sponsor books in our communities as part of the program’s hands-on training. It is our hope that young people and adults take full advantage of this opportunity to promote and support education through reading.

In order to achieve success, Jr. Leaders must know their market, and know their product, so they read each book in it’s entirety before marketing it. Part of the proceeds from the sales of these books goes to support our annual Youth Sports Camps.

D.R.E. Andre Farr, CEO of the BSAA, organizes
mentorship and networking opportunities between members in the D.R.E. Program and
Executive Members of the BSAA.

Through practical training, hands-on activity and collective effort, D.R.E. Members are able to develop viable entrepreneurial skills and the necessary business acumen at a relatively early stage in life. D.R.E. Members are taught how to identify their individual learning styles and that of others to successfully transfer that information into business profitability.

D.R.E. is an enterprise moving forward with its initiative to create a network of young black entrepreneurs. The vision of D.R.E. is to utilize the leveraging power of 400 young top-tier entrepreneurs. The strength of the brand depends on the unity of these new business leaders. As the group builds effective long lasting relationships, D.R.E. will continue to serve as a model for young aspiring entrepreneurs to look up to. Brand equals expectation, and the expectation of D.R.E. is to develop top tier professionals, instill enduring leadership values, and finally, leave a legacy for the youth to emulate. The D.R.E. system represents in itself the legacy of the Black Sports Agents Association, and will be passed down and replicated, effectively serving to economically empower our
communities for generations to come.

Andre Farr
Chairman & Founder
Disciplined Respected Entrepreneurs

D.R.E.
